JanuARTy Day 22: Berridan

Berridan is the Chief Warden of the elven prison in Mir'Aran (the capitol city). His personality is most easily described as grumpy, indifferent introvert. He lives alone in a small apartment adjoining the prison grounds, and prefers it that way, keeping company only with his dog and a potted fern. Berridan's mantra is that it's his job to keep the doors locked. Justice, mercy, fairness, those aren't his jobs, but the jobs of the judges and the courts. If you end up in his prison, you will stay there until the court says you can leave. Berridan treats his prisoners fairly-- they are fed unexciting but nourishing food, given minimal but functional places to sleep and relieve themselves, and those who are granted some modicum of mobility get outside now and then, even if it is sometimes to perform hard labor. Some of the prisoners, especially the magically gifted, face harsher restrictions. The minor practitioners frequently serve their sentence fitted with magic-inhibiting manacles so that they can't simply walk through the walls or teleport away. More powerful wizards present considerably more problems, and often require layer after layer of precautions and arcane security measures, especially if they are uncooperative.
