Description
A capable and benevolent ruler, Velhirion, current reigning monarch of the high elves, doesn't lead the indolent, detached, self-centered life of the typical monarch. Instead, he is very hands-on in the running of his country, preferring to oversee moderate to major issues himself rather than delegate to an army of advisers and underlings. To accomplish this, he devotes himself to a great deal of study in every relevant field -- economics, war strategy, diplomacy, culture and customs, agriculture, science, foreign languages, and combat training, just to name a few. He also enjoys mentally profiling people-- testing their limits, seeing what makes them tick, reading people like a book, and has a poker face to shame a statue. His children don't get to be lazy spoiled rich brats either-- they are put through the same rigorous education to ensure that if the throne is ever suddenly theirs, they would be prepared to shoulder the responsibility on short notice.
He has two major failings-- the first is his family's near-total lack of gift for magic. No one in the long bloodline of his dynasty was born with much innate capacity for magic, and the most the king can muster without severe strain is lighting a few candles, or other such very simple spells. His father had no ability, nor his grandfather, and neither do his children-- hence part of the reason for his obsession in covering nearly every other area of learning. (The staff he is pictured with is a recent gift -- a remade artifact that greatly amplifies the bearer's magical power. He's delighted to have it... but is still figuring out how to use it, and is more than a little humbled by just how potent it is.)
His second failing is deeply personal. Only a few months after her birth, his first child, his elder daughter Baidhrin, was kidnapped. In spite of a massive search, and the joint efforts of a throng of court magi (including the current archmage at the time), she was never found -- and Velhirion never forgave himself for losing her. All the money and power and armies one could have-- and he'd somehow managed to have something as precious as a child stolen right out from under his nose. Velhirion prides himself on being a rational, collected, logical man, but where the topic of his lost daughter comes up, rationality goes right out the window. This perceived failing as a parent and a protector colors his relationship with his other two children-- and as expected, he is ridiculously protective of them.
Velhirion is married to Lindraiel, and is the father of Baidhrin (also known by the alias Saenathra), Talathion, and Minhara, all of whom you shall see as JanuARTy progresses.
